Blumenauer/DeFazio co-sponsor "We the People" proposed amendment

First there were none from Oregon. Then there was one, following shortly thereafter by yet one more.

What are we talking about? Oregon Representative co-sponsors of HJR48, the “We the People” proposed constitutional amendment which states that Corporations Are Not People and Money Is Not Speech.

Our friends at Move to Amend in Portland met with Rep. Blumenauer last year, asking that he support such a constitutional amendment. But at that time he was not aware that HJR26 that did exactly that had been introduced by US Representative Nolan during the last congressional session. When told about it, he said he would check it out. Nothing happened, however, until the present session when Rep. Nolan once again introduced the “We the People” amendment as HJR48. And the folks at Move to Amend Portland sprung into action, calling his office and asking that he co-sponsor. The response from his staff was positive and a couple of weeks later, it was a done deal. Rep. Blumenauer became the 6th co-sponsor.

And a few weeks later, after outreach from Move to Amend people in his district, Rep. Peter DeFazio also became a co-sponsor. He wis now the eighth co-sponsor.

So we need to congratulate ourselves on our good work but realize that more work needs to be done because Oregon Representatives Schrader and Walden have not yet signed on as co-sponsors. While we have no expectation that Rep. Walden will at any time in the near (or likely distance) future, we should expect Rep. Schrader to do so. During the last election, Rep. Schrader, along with Rep. DeFazio, signed the Move to Amend pledge saying that the constitution should be amended to say that Corporations Are Not People and Money Is Not Speech.

So call or write Rep. Schrader, express your support for HJR48, and your desire that he join Rep. Blumenauer and Rep. DeFazio as a co-sponsor. Rep. Schrader can be reached at

HJR48 has not been introduced in the US Senate yet. Take a moment now to send both Senator Wyden and Merkley an email asking that they introduce HJR48 in the Senate. You can use the on-line form from Move to Amend here.
Thank you for taking this action.
Oh, one more thing. Forward this email to your friends and Move to Amend supporters, asking them to act as well.

GA Report/General Report

I know many of you are traveling, hosting visitors, and otherwise enjoying summer.  It is about to get really hot here in Eugene, and that will be ...well not so pleasant for me, anyway.

It was fun to see some of you at GA...wish we could have had more time to network...but was pleased with the time that we did get.

By now, many of you know that HB 2828 was passed, and is now funded!!!!!!

Let's hear it for all of you who worked so hard on it.  I plan to thank my legislators for this action. And to inform my Congregation of this important step.

This is the bill to fund a study of the most eficatious way to provide State Wide Health care.

Big feather in HCAO's cap.  And I like to think that we UU's had a lot to do with it.  Pat Bitner and Ruth Duemler here did so much....would love to hear from others about their contributions.

David Hyde, from our Ashland Congregation, is our newest Board Member.  Welcome to our Board, David.....we really appreciate your help, and input.

David and I would like to talk to each of you individually, about what you would like from this group.

We need to know how to support your efforts, and what you want ...or how you want help with our efforts with the Legislature....or events, or Education.  Hope you will start to ask your groups, so we can hear all the input.

It was interesting to hear the "national" Statewide Advocacy Network (SAN) presentation at GA.
Hope some of you were there also...and we would love to hear your take on it all.

I would ask you again, to send your phone numbers....I did not get all of that in my contact list!  Dumb of me to not keep track.  I know I have talked to many of you.

This will help  us as we ask for your input.  We will also try to get a phone conference in Sept., with you all, if you would like that.

Rev. Katie Larsell will be helping the Board with some great input on proceeding with the organizational end of things.  She will be helping to write a grant for some financial support for UUVoices. She will also help with the organizational plans ....with your input, for our  Annual Meeting which will be Oct. 17th 2015...in Eugene...Do put that on your calendar...and let me know if you need to stay over to make things easier.  I am sure we can provide you with accommodations.

Do let us hear from you all.   Thanks...and again Happy Summer    Sue Craig
